Danai Gurira teases more of what fans can expect from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, including how emotional it will be.
Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye in the MCU, reveals new story details for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Director Ryan Coogler returns to the MCU with the sequel for 2018’s critical and commercial hit Black Panther. Debuting later this year, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever assembles the same core cast from the original film, though it sadly won’t feature King T’Challa following Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing due to cancer in 2020.
A sequel to Black Panther was inevitable, but it wasn’t officially announced until San Diego Comic-Con 2019 when Marvel Studios laid out their initial post-Infinity Saga plans. Following Boseman’s death, Black Panther 2 entered an uncertain stage. Ultimately, Coogler and his team were able to rework the movie, reshaping the script to honor T’Challa and the beloved actor who brought him to life. While plot details remain scant at the moment, Gurira assures fans that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will give T’Challa the send-off that he rightly deserves.
While walking down the 2022 Met Gala red carpet, The Walking Dead alum provides a brief but important update regarding what fans can expect from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (via Yahoo!). She teases that the sequel features a “heart wrenching” narrative that the public will hopefully relate to. Gurira also emphasizes everyone’s commitment to honor Boseman’s legacy through the film, stating:
“It tells a very heart wrenching story. And that is all I can say! We hope… that it resonates for everybody the way it does for us. It’s all about [Chadwick] for all of us. It’s all an outpouring to love and honor him.”
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever isn’t due until November of this year. While there still isn’t any marketing material for the film, the first footage for Black Panther 2 debuted during CinemaCon 2022. The bit was part of a longer sizzle reel and features Shuri (Letitia Wright), Okoye, and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) united at the front lines, getting ready for a massive battle. It’s worth noting that the sequel is rumored to feature the introduction of the MCU’s Atlantis and Namor the Submariner, who could be played by Tenoch Huerta. In between further developing the MCU, though, it sounds like Black Panther 2 will find time for poignant, emotional moments. Gurira’s comments indicate this is a movie made with a lot of love, and that will likely come through with its story.
A few details regarding Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have already been confirmed, including the involvement of Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), who will eventually assume her superhero persona as Ironheart. But nothing is known regarding how the sequel will handle T’Challa’s absence. For what it’s worth, however, between what the same team was able to achieve in the original Black Panther film and everyone’s commitment to honoring Boseman, it’s safe to say that Gurira and the rest of the crew are preparing something special for the fans.
