The US Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, has at least three rocket attacks. The attack took place on Sunday. This was stated in a BBC Online report on Monday.
A rocket hits the U.S. Embassy cafeteria. The other two rockets fall near. A source told the news agency AFP. A security source told Reuters that at least three people were injured in the rocket attack.
The first US embassy worker was injured in a rocket attack in the last few years.
So far no group has claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. However, the United States has blamed Iran-backed Iraqi militias for such attacks in the past.
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi has condemned the rocket attack on the US Embassy in Baghdad. He said such actions could turn Iraq into a battlefield.
The US State Department says it is calling on the Iraqi government to fulfill its obligation to protect US diplomatic installations. Recently, there were multiple attacks targeting Iraqi military bases used by US embassies and US troops in Baghdad.
Iran’s top general Qasim Solaimani was killed in a US drone attack on the Baghdad airport on January 3. The same attack also killed the Iranian-backed Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
The United States is in deep tension with Iran over the killing of Qasim Solaimani. Anti-US aggression in Iraq also increases.
On January 8, Iran launched a missile attack on two US military bases in Iraq to avenge the killing of Solaimani. Later, multiple rocket attacks targeted the US Embassy in Baghdad. Iran has denied responsibility for the attack on the US embassy.
